Pauline Fairclough always loved doing hair and that love of hair has lead her to owning her own salon. Raised in Trelawney Jamaica, she started doing hair in her sister’s beauty salon in Jamaica.
In 1992, in her early 20s, Pauline came to the US. and enrolled in cosmetology
school in 1993. After finishing school she got her first shot at a salon called Salon International on Boston Road in the Bronx.
Now open six days a week, New Beginnings is Pauline’s haven. The
salon, spacious and adorned in soft light colors contains three rooms.
One room contains the styling chair and dryers for customers, one holds
hair products and wigs and the third room is used as a private area with
massage chairs.
Customers with damaged hair who may feel uncomfortable can get their hair
treated in the private area. “This is a hair care salon where we care for
people with damaged hair and a wide range of customers. I use some of the
best products on the market especially for African American hair because
not all products are made for our hair.”
Describing herself as a versatile hair stylist, Pauline said that she
wants her talents to take her far. “I would love to have my own products
because there is some junk out there and I want some more hair salons in this
area because black people are losing their hair like crazy due to stress,
not eating right and using pharmacy products on themselves.” She said she
wants to help her community with this problem.
She stresses: “DON’T USE OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS ON YOUR HAIR!”
